Yesterday, I had the honor of taking Earth and Sky Yoga at Charm City Yoga’s new Severna Park location. Earth and Sky Yoga is Charm City’s name for partner/acro yoga.
If you are not familiar, partner yoga is performing yoga postures with another person. Acro yoga marries partner yoga and acrobatics.
For example, in the pictures above, my partner, the lovely Miss Sara Jaye, was the base, and in the other picture I was the base. In another acro yoga pose, I was in Utkatasana, or Chair Pose, and Sara was standing on my thighs at a 45 degree angle to the earth.
What is remarkable about partner yoga and acro yoga is the incredible amount of trust involved. Any trepidation will be sensed by your partner and the two of you will take a tumble.
However, if you clear your head and just go for it, you will surprise yourself at what you can accomplish. The same also applies with a personal yoga practice. When you trust yourself, amazing things will happen.
Furthermore, a benefit of partner yoga over a personal practice is the healing qualities that come with touch. Often times, we are so caught up in our own dramas that we fail to realize the power of touch therapy.
As a yoga instructor, it is my job to assist others in their yoga postures to ease them into a deeper awareness of their practice. I touch strangers all of the time.
We often fear the touch from strangers like a plague, but opening ourselves up to the theraputic qualities of touch therapy can help soften the edges of life. Perhaps we begin to realize that the touch of a stranger in your yoga class is nothing to fear. Instead, touch can help further the depths of your yoga practice, and open your heart off the mat.
If you are interested in trying partner or acro yoga, I would encourage you to take the Earth and Air Yoga class at the Charm City Yoga’s Severna Park location. Refina, the instructor, has extremely clear instruction and a grounding spirit about her. Often, she has her practice partner there, Rhiannon, to properly demonstrate how beautiful partner/acro yoga can be when we dedicate time to it.
As Sara Jaye and I practice more and get better at it, expect more photos of different partner and acro yoga postures. I hope to see you there!
